Hyderabad: Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL) launched the first Sikorsky S-92 Helicopter Cabin made in India at its facility at the aerospace and precision engineering Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The cabin will be delivered to Sikorsky Aircraft Corp, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp, this month.
United Technologies Chairman Louis Chenevert said that the company was focusing on increasing localisation of its products in India and would continue to forge partnerships with Indian firms. "I truly believe also that you can only win in this market if you localise as much as you can," he said.
He said that India was joining its global partners for S-92 helicopters that include Spain, China, Taiwan and Brazil. The S-92 cabins, which are currently manufactured in Japan, would now be produced in Hyderabad.
"The delivery of the Sikorsky S-92 cabin is on schedule and an important milestone for the Tatas' plans for the aerospace industry. It also reflects highly of the determination, project execution and precision manufacturing expertise that India as a nation possesses," Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata said.
Steve Estill, Vice-president, United Technologies said they were talking to two companies in India, including the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, to jointly develop military products.
Louis Chenevert said the facility would play an important role in attending to the UK Government's order for 28 S-92 helicopters. The order was valued at $2 billion. It sold about sold 40 S-92 helicopters last year.
"I think the helicopter opportunities are numerous and all this infrastructure that's being built will create strong opportunities," said Louis Chenevert.
"This is the start of our investments. Tatas will locate all their aerospace activities in Hyderabad. We have chosen the right place," said Ratan Tata, pointing out that the city had built good road and aviation infrastructure over a period of time.
The Chief Minister Dr. K Rosiah had a one to one meeting with Ratan Tata and requested Tata to invest in Andhra Pradesh in different sectors. Ratan Tata told the Chief Minister that the Tata Group is interested in Steel, Power and Automobile sectors. The Chief Minister said that economic development and employment generation are the twin objectives of the State Government. Dr Rosaiah said, in the past, land was surveyed by the Tata Group for locating their unit, for Tata Nano Car Project. In view of the growing automobile market in India and the increasing market share of Tata cars of various models they might be requested to invest in the automotive sector in the State, either in the outskirts of Hyderabad or any other location as per their choice.
Dr Rosaiah said that he had come to know that Tata Group had formed another Joint Venture with the AgustaWestland Helicopters Group and was planning to set its manufacturing unit in India and the Group is seriously considering Hyderabad for its location. The Chief Minister requested Ratan Tata to finalise this venture at the earliest.
Indian Rotorcraft, a joint venture between Tatas and Italian company AgustaWestland, is likely to set up a helicopter manufacturing unit at GMR's aviation SEZ at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The JV will manufacture AW119, an eight-seat utility helicopter here for AgustaWestland, a company owned by Italy-based Finmeccanica.
The unveiling of the cabin coincides with US President Barack Obama’s visit to India.
United Technologies Corp, which makes Otis elevators, Sikorsky helicopters and Carrier air-conditioning systems plus fire and security systems, expects to grow its India revenue by 20% this year from about $500 million in 2009 and has set a 2015 target of $2.5 billion.
The Indian government plans to spend approximately $100 billion over the next decade to overhaul its Soviet-era defence system. United Tech's Sikorsky Aircraft Corp is eyeing defence deals worth $8-$12 billion in India by 2018 and plans to manufacture its Black Hawk helicopters locally, the company said in February.
